Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) Managing Director, Gospel Kazako has expressed commitment to promoting Best Girl Award Initiative with an aim of encouraging them to perform well academically.
He made the remarks Thursday during Zodiak Best Girl Cocktail reception at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe.
“Indicators in the education sector in Malawi are clear that a girl child is not at par with boy child on how she performs in her academic pursuits,” he said.
He added that the main factors that lead to the situation include financial problem, cultural believes and social issues prevailing among the country’s society.
He, therefore said both a boy and girl child need to be encouraged in their academic endeavours.
“It is even more imperative that the girl child be given special encouragement to achieve the Millennium Development Goals such as universal primary education, promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women among others,” he said.
In a separate interview, Secretary for the Ministry of Education, Justine Saidi said government will work together with ZBS to ensure that the girl child has access to quality education.
“Our ministry will continue providing support to young girls and boys through provision of scholarships and constructing hostels for them in various schools in the country,” he assured.
On behalf of top girl’s awardees from 2009 t to date, Dr. Wezzie Kamanga who was privileged to study medicine in China under the Chinese Government Scholarship in collaboration with the Malawi Ministry of Education expressed gratitude to both.
“We graduated with degrees in our various fields of study, six medical doctors and one economist. There are also nine medical students currently studying in China. I am now an intern doctor at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe,” she said.
Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, Liu Hongyang encouraged all young girls in the country to work hard in education with an aim to benefit from the Chinese Scholarships and develop Malawi after their studies.
Zodiak Best Girl Award Initiative started in 2006, since then more that 20 outstanding girls have benefited with the scholarships to study in various universities within and outside the country. Some of them are studying medicine, business administration and engineering among other courses.
