There was a time when I had just given my life to Christ as a teenager, that I regarded all manner of entertainment as sin. A worshiper, to me, was not supposed to watch movies, watch football and be engaged in all manner of entertainment activities.
Well I was thankfully zealous, but unfortunately wrong. There is a place for entertainment and enjoying the things that God has created and that is part of worship.
1 Timothy 6:17 Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be conceited and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who richly provides all things for us to enjoy.
In the scripture above, Paul is laying down an attitude that we should have towards the created things of this world. He says regarding wealth, do not put your hope in it, but put your hope in God, knowing that He is the one who has given us all things to enjoy.
Firstly, we should not allow the things of the world take control of us. When that happens, they become our idols. Secondly, we should enjoy the things that God has created for us. In other words, when we enjoy, God is pleased. Therefore, enjoyment is part of worship. We are acknowledging God as the creator.
Take some time out and enjoy the creation. Watch some nice movies that will make you laugh. Do all these things with self-control so that they don’t take God’s place in you. When they do, its better to cut them off.
