Salima, Mana: National Theatre Association of Malawi (NTAM) on Monday launched its new chapter in Salima district in an effort to promote art and livelihood of artists in the country,
Speaking during the launch, Member of Parliament for Salima North West Constituency, Enock Phale said the chapter would help to expose and empower the talent of artists in the district.
“From this initiative, Salima will be able to benefit from the chapter through economic empowerment having in mind that art attracts and after selling one’s skills one can be able to benefits as an original owner of the artistic work whether in drama or music,” he said.
Phale pledged for more support to the grouping and urged the chapter to be active and innovative to make sure that it registers success and produce the most required results.
Central Region President for NTAM, Edwin Phiri said that theatre has got a transformative power in the society hence the move to have a new chapter in the district which would help promote untapped talent.
“A district without art is the same as being dead. Theatre brings life and development in a community and that is why there is need to promote it,” he added.
Phiri urged members from the district to make sure that they put Salima on the map by being united and love another so that they are recognized nationally.
He urged the Members of Parliament (MPs) from the district to support theatre at Council level by lobbying for more support saying the development would help artists to benefit from their work.
“As a way of revamping theatre in Salima there is a need for members of parliament to help us lobby for a theatre at council level as well at national level when they present their issues in the august house,” Phiri suggested.
One of the artist, Emmanuel Kagwa commended NTAM for launching the chapter in the district saying it would not only expose talent of the existing artists but expose the hidden talent.
