Malawi Investment Trade Centre (MITC) on Monday awarded Polytechnic students innovators for the Dubai Expo 2020 Malawi pavilion best design.
The innovators were in three teams and the best of them all went away with U$4000 while the second and third pocketed U$2000 and U$1000 respectively.
Fourth year Information Communication Technology (ICT) student who was leader of the winning team, Yusuf Chimole attributed the success to hard work as well as determination to learning new things every day.
“This is our chance to show the whole world what we have done and it’s no mean achievement. Everyone that will attend the Expo will have a feel of what kind of pavilion Polytechnic students from Malawi have designed.
“But without hard work and determination, we couldn’t have been here today celebrating the success. I call on the youth in the country that despite many challenges we face every day, we can still show the world what we are capable of,” said Chimole.
In his remarks, MITC Chief Executive Officer, Clement Kumbemba said the competition was a way of rewarding young innovators and to inspire them to do more so that they feel appreciated.
Kumbemba said: “There are a lot of innovators in the country that have done commendable works but haven’t been recognised. The competition therefore is also another opportunity that will identify suitable investors at the expo apart from the prize money they have gotten.”
He then appealed to the private sector to take part in the six month long expo as they are mostly the end users of technology.
Principal secretary in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Dr Ken Ndala who also graced the occasion, called on higher learning institutions in the country to expose their students’ creativity to ensure home grown solutions for the country’s developmental issues.
Expected to commence on October 20, 2019 to April 10, 2021, the expo will attract a total of 190 countries worldwide, with an estimation of 25 million visitors. Malawi’s day will take place on November 5, 2020.
