Malawi Hails Japanese Scholarships

Director for Teacher Education and Development in the Ministry of Education, Misheck Munthali Monday expressed satisfaction with the relevance and value added by Japanese scholarships.

He said the scholarships emphasize on science and technology and this was in line with the development agenda of the country

Munthali was speaking during a dinner organized by the Japanese Embassy for alumni who studied in different postgraduate fields in Japan.

He said the skills and knowledge that the students pursued in Japan was applicable and vital to solving some of the challenges that the country is facing adding that Japan’s curriculums more advanced and contextual to the country

The Director said education is one of the strong pillars of the country’s development and this is reflected in the Sustainable Development goals 2030, under goal number four, therefore the Japanese scholarships were of enormous value to the development of the nation.

“We are satisfied with the performance of those who went to Japan to study they are exceptionally good when it comes to performance at their workplaces,” he said.

Munthali said most of the students that study in Japan after returning they add to the research departments because their knowledge is vast.

On the day, three students were sent off after their applications were successful for postgraduate studies in Japan.

Ambassador of Japan to Malawi, Kae Yanagisawa said the embassy of Japan is more interested in following up on the Alumni’s to establish whether they are applying what they studied in Japan at their workplaces.

She said Japan is much more advanced in different ways and therefore offering scholarships to Malawians is one way of directly impacting the development of the country.

Yanagisawa said aside from the scholarships that are given to Malawians they are more interested in changing mindsets of Malawians because development starts by changing the perspective that people have of their country.

She said the Alumnis had to always have in mind that the different fields they pursued  in Japan was for the development of the country therefore one way of giving back to the country was to be productive in their various work places.

The Japanese government has provided capacity building programmes to Malawians in several fields including agriculture, trade, rural development, women empowerment, natural resources, education, health, mining, information and diplomacy among others.
