Malawi Govt Identifies Contractor for Chikwawa East Bank Road

Government says it has now identified a contractor to commence construction of the $53 million Chikwawa East Bank Road in the Lower Shire, Transport Minister, Jappie Mhango disclosed this Monday in Chikwawa.

Mhango said the contractor, China Railway Number 5, is going to construct ‘gravel all weather road’ with four huge bridges. The Minister said the contractor is already on the ground scouting for a place to establish a campsite.

The east bank road connects Chikwawa and Nsanje districts on the eastern part. It passes through Thabwa-Livunzu-Fatima areas.

“The whole project will cost 53 Million United States dollars which will largely come from World Bank’s Flood recovery programme,” Minister said, adding that the first phase will cost government $15 million as well.

The Minister said apart from the East bank road, government is also in the process of resuming construction works on Chikwawa-Chapananga road.

“In fact, the contractor has gone back to the site to continue with the construction of Mwanza Bridge at Chapananga area,” the Minister explained.

The construction of these two roads are likely going to ease mobility challenges and enhancing social economic development in the process.
