Dowa DC ask chiefs to participate in promoting education

By Tamala Kamanga

Dowa, Mana: Dowa District Commissioner (DC), Alex Mdooko, has pleaded with traditional authorities to collaborate with stakeholders in the education sector in the efforts to promote education in the district.

The DC said on Wednesday in a full council meeting following the district’s poor performance of the 2022 Primary School Leaving Certificate of Education (PSLCE) examinations which Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB), through Ministry of Education, released on Sunday.

In these results, Dowa is on number 20 out of 34 education districts with a pass rate of 80.62 percent.

“This is not one man’s job; all of us have a huge role to play. Let me also ask our traditional authorities to strengthen bylaws in their communities concerning education, to make sure that all parents with school-going children send their children to school.

“In addition, help us in ensuring that cultural activities are not done during school calendar so that our children are not disturbed,” he advised.

He further stressed the need for councillors and Members of Parliament to take advantage of organisations in their areas to help them with construction of classroom blocks in their communities.

In his remarks, Director of Education Youth and Sports (DEYS) for Dowa, Christopher Kumikundi, said the poor results were as a result of withholding of results from seven schools in the district.

He told the meeting that the ministry would employ auxiliary teachers to improve quality education in primary schools.
