Thyolo, Mana: Thyolo District Food and Nutrition Officer, Whitney Kondowe has expressed satisfaction with the AFIKEPO Project being implemented in the district.
Kondowe expressed the satisfaction during a meeting of AFIKEPO Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture Programme implementation updates held in the district on Wednesday.
In an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana), Kondowe said through the project people in the district are able to practice nutritional basics.
“We have instituted indicators in all aspects such as production and consumption indicators; water, sanitation and hygiene indicators as well as women of reproductive age and adolescent girls indicators.
“Through the initiative, communities have taken ownership of the programme especially local leaders after being well trained as champions. Others have taken up activities like cookery demonstrations while others are practicing seed multiplication; hence, promoting good productivity,” she explained.
Kondowe said the project has reduced the number of referrals to the district nutrition rehabilitation unit on the account of malnourished children.
Thyolo District Council Director of Planning and Development, Morson Magombo said through the project people are empowered to work hard for their source of income to attain self-reliance.
“Households need income to have good nutrition; we’re, therefore, encouraging communities to establish saving and loan groups in order to generate income to support themselves financially,” Magombo said.
AFIKEPO is being implemented in all the 14 traditional authorities in Thyolo and it has since established 795 care groups, 369 care promoters, 5,131 cluster leaders and 380 nutrition demonstration plots.
