People from Traditional Authority Chambwe in Kasungu District had a reason to smile when the nongovernmental organization, Good Neighbors handed over Chambwe Health Center to the community.
Speaking during the handover ceremony Friday, Good Neighbors Country Director, Jooyoung Choi said as a non-governmental organization, they are committed to working towards providing basic support to people of the community.
“We conducted an area research and found out that Kasungu, particularly, Traditional Authority Chambwe had no health facility. We decided to put up a health center close by to reduce the distance people traveled to get treatment and ensure that people have easy access to health services,” Choi said.
In his remarks, Kasungu District Health Officer, Dr. Emanuel Golombe commended Good Neighbors for the continued health support in Kasungu District, saying it will shorten the distance as well as reduce congestion in health centers in Kasungu district.
“We are very much happy with Good Neighbors for this health center project because people were traveling long distances to get access to health services. Now, Good Neighbors has officially handed over Chambwe Health Center and people, more especially pregnant mothers, will be treated here in time,” Golombe said.
Asked to comment on the development, Senior Traditional Authority Chambwe expressed his appreciation to Good Neighbors for selecting his area for the health facility and for its continued health support to the people of Chambwe.
In conjunction with the Government of Malawi and through the Ministry of Health, Good Neighbors has constructed a new OPD, maternity wing, VCT centre, three houses for workers, and provided drugs and equipment wealthy over K140 million.
